Overview

A powerful and textural single-varietal Roussanne sourced from two blocks within Yangarra Estate’s biodynamic vineyard in Blewitt Springs. Basket pressing, wild fermentation and maturation on lees create a richly layered dry white with fragrance, savoury complexity and mineral freshness.

Yangarra Estate specialises in southern Rhône varieties grown across its McLaren Vale property, where altitude, ancient geology, ironstone-rich sandy soils and maritime influence contribute freshness, structure and distinctive site expression.

Vintage

A normally wet winter was followed by a dry spring. Unexpected rainfall during December and January encouraged larger bunches and berry development, while warm conditions through February and early March promoted flavour ripeness and concentration.

Winemaking

Fruit from two estate blocks was hand-picked on 9 and 12 March and basket pressed, with the earlier free-run juice retained for the blend. No sulphur or acid was added to the juice. Passive oxidation was used to remove unstable phenolic compounds naturally and emphasise the variety’s characteristic texture.

The unfined and unsettled juice was transferred predominantly to seasoned French oak puncheons for wild-yeast fermentation. Malolactic fermentation was prevented. The wine matured for seven months with its lees retained and stirred monthly before racking, blending and bottling in November 2024.

There’s a lovely freshness here, with floral and saline-edged aromas supported by delicate notes of honeysuckle, lemon confit and mandarin oranges. The palate shows great tension and purity, driven by a mineral line of acidity. Pristine and generous, without any of the fleshiness of warmer vintages. Drink or hold.

There’s lovely density on display here with preserved lemon, baked peach, baked yellow apple, grilled nectarine and candied ginger making up the core… The palate is richly textured while still precise and fresh… Intensity, texture, complexity and ample structure – it’s all there and still with a fresh appeal. Excellent.

There’s body, there’s flavour and there’s more than a little texture. This is a ripe and rich expression of roussanne. Grapefruit, grilled nectarines, stones, smoke and cooked apple characters drift into peppermint, saltbush and mineral… It’s certainly pleasurable. Flamboyant even.

Rich and complex bouquet that summons notions of barrel ferment and smoky reduction, adding a dab of honey, the palate rich and full bodied, with impressive depth and structure, bone-dry balance and a sheen of fine silty tannins contributing to the texture.
