Overview
The 2024 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is a benchmark expression of Martinborough from a vintage the estate describes as one of its finest. Sourced from six locations across the Martinborough Terrace and incorporating some of Ata Rangi's oldest vines, it brings together fragrant red fruit, savoury complexity, finely textured tannins and vibrant acidity. With two 97-point reviews and considerable cellaring potential, this is a compelling release from one of New Zealand's most respected Pinot Noir producers.
Vintage
Ata Rangi describes 2024 as a vintage of real distinction, shaped not by a single factor but by many elements aligning with rare precision. The resulting Pinot Noir wines combine balance, concentration and freshness, with the estate considering the vintage among the finest it has seen.
Vineyard & Viticulture
The fruit comes from six locations on the Martinborough Terrace, including old-vine parcels across Ata Rangi's vineyards on the region's alluvial gravels. The wine is certified organic, reflecting the estate's focus on thoughtful vineyard stewardship and the distinctive character of its Martinborough sites.
Winemaking
Fermentation uses native yeasts with 40% whole bunches. The finished wine is unfined and unfiltered, preserving texture, aromatic detail and site expression.
Producer Tasting Notes
Classic Ata Rangi aromas of sweet, dried hay and sage meld with bright fruit, notes of cranberry and ripe strawberry. The palate is supple with finely textured tannins that give the sensation of velvet. The acid interplays with the tannins to give a fresh, vibrant finish. Complex but whimsical.
Critic Reviews
97 Points — Stephen Wong MW
A complex and initially restrained expression showing blueberry, raspberry and cherry with sweet vanilla oak, earthy and peppery spice. The palate combines ripe spicy warmth, etched acidity and finely detailed yet structural tannins, finishing impressively long and expansive. Wong considers it a wine with innate power that will reward several years in the cellar.
97 Points — Cameron Douglas MS
“A wine to buy and cellar, this is a stellar wine, taut and locked-up yet revealing just enough power and concentration to show that you should be buying a dozen (frankly more is better) to lay down and consider opening the first bottle in 2030 - just to check. A completely delicious and seductive bouquet suggesting myriad red berries framed by echoes of dried herb and soil then wood smoke and nut, an ever-so-gentle reductive seam and flinty moment. Pure, dry, ripe and complex.”
96 Points — James Suckling
Lively and inspired, with red cherries, strawberries, dried orange rind and peppercorns. Medium-bodied with fine, silky tannins, bright acidity and refined texture, showing tension and vitality through a crisp, stony and lingering finish.
94 Points — Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion
“Very pretty perfume of red cherry, green tomato, a touch of jalapeño, some dark chocolate and, curiously, a little exotic, tropical floral lift. Juicy in the palate, with a wrap of fine, silty tannins drawn long to a fine, bright finish. A little extra dusting of woody spices emerges, too. A wine of joy and approachability.”
About Ata Rangi
Ata Rangi was founded by Clive Paton in 1980, when the first vines were planted on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of Martinborough Village. Clive's sister Alison acquired an adjoining block soon afterwards, and Phyll Pattie joined the business in 1986 after working as a winemaker in Marlborough. More than four decades later, Ata Rangi has established an international reputation as one of the New World's most respected Pinot Noir producers. Today, Alison Paton heads the day-to-day business, Helen Masters crafts the wines and vineyard manager Ian Ewart oversees the vineyards.
