The 2022 Hewitson Old Garden Mourvèdre is one of Australia's most distinctive and historically significant red wines. Produced by Hewitson, this remarkable wine is sourced from the famed Old Garden Vineyard in the Barossa Valley, home to some of the world's oldest surviving Mourvèdre (Mataro) vines, originally planted in 1853.
Often referred to as a "living museum vineyard," the Old Garden Vineyard remains dry-grown and ungrafted, with many vines approaching 170 years of age. These ancient bush vines produce naturally tiny yields of intensely flavoured fruit, resulting in a wine of extraordinary concentration, complexity, and individuality.
The 2022 growing season delivered excellent conditions for Mourvèdre, allowing for slow ripening and the development of rich fruit character while preserving freshness and balance. Hewitson's minimalist winemaking approach ensures the unique personality of this historic vineyard remains the focus.
The bouquet is deeply aromatic, revealing layers of blackberry, black cherry, plum, and blueberry, complemented by notes of black pepper, star anise, dried herbs, earth, leather, and exotic spice. As the wine opens, savoury nuances of game, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate emerge, reflecting both varietal character and old-vine pedigree.
The palate is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, combining dense dark fruit with fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Mourvèdre's hallmark savoury complexity and earthy depth are beautifully balanced by freshness and elegance. The finish is long, structured, and persistent, highlighting the concentration that only ancient vines can deliver.
While already impressive in its youth, the 2022 Old Garden Mourvèdre is built for long-term cellaring and will continue to develop additional complexity over the next 15–25 years.
