The 2021 Penfolds Bin 180 Cabernet Shiraz is an exceptional limited-edition release created to commemorate 180 years of Penfolds winemaking, from 1844 to 2024. Rather than producing a conventional multi-regional Penfolds blend, Chief Winemaker Peter Gago selected two outstanding parcels from the exceptional 2021 Coonawarra vintage to create a wine of remarkable pedigree, precision and longevity.
Bin 180 comprises 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Shiraz, sourced entirely from Coonawarra. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Penfolds Block 10, while the Shiraz comes from Block 5. These distinguished vineyard parcels have a long history within Penfolds, with Block 10 also contributing fruit to wines including Bin 707 and Bin 169.
The outstanding 2021 Coonawarra season allowed Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz to ripen slowly and evenly, producing fruit with exceptional concentration, freshness and tannin maturity. The wine was matured for 16 months in French oak hogsheads, entirely one-year-old oak, giving structure and complexity without overwhelming the distinctive Coonawarra character.
Deep purple-red in colour, Bin 180 opens with blackberry, blueberry, cassis and redcurrant, developing more complex notes of ironstone, Coonawarra red earth, smoked meat and exotic spice. The palate is powerful yet remarkably refined, with concentrated black and red fruits wrapped in fine, persistent tannins. Bright acidity and beautifully integrated French oak provide freshness and structure, leading to an exceptionally long and layered finish. Penfolds itself describes the wine as youthful and built for patience.
The quality of this commemorative release has been recognised with outstanding critical acclaim, including 99 points from Tyson Stelzer, 99 points from Ken Gargett and 99 points from Huon Hooke, alongside 97 points from Erin Larkin of The Wine Advocate.
