Overview
The 2016 Langmeil Winery The Freedom 1843 Shiraz is a rare 3L Double Magnum release from one of the Barossa Valley's most historically significant old-vine Shiraz sites. The Freedom vineyard is believed to have been planted in 1843 by Christian Auricht, a Prussian settler who found freedom in the Barossa Valley after escaping war and persecution.
At 173 years of vine age in the 2016 vintage, these ancient Shiraz vines are among the oldest and rarest surviving productive vines in the world. This is a powerful, full-bodied Barossa Shiraz built around depth, concentration and old-vine intensity.
Vintage & Winemaking
The 2016 vintage followed a dry winter and warm spring, with timely rain and mild late-summer conditions helping flavour and colour develop evenly. The Freedom Shiraz was harvested on 4 March from the Langmeil Winery site in Tanunda.
The wine is 100% Shiraz, gently destemmed, open fermented and basket pressed. It was matured for 26 months in French oak hogsheads and barriques, with 70% new oak and 30% seasoned oak, enhancing the natural fruit intensity and structure of the ancient vines.
