Overview
Moss Wood is one of Margaret River’s founding estates, with its original vineyard planted in 1969. Its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is recognised for combining concentrated varietal fruit, fine structure and exceptional longevity.
The outstanding 2010 release is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. It received 98 points from Bob Campbell, alongside 95-point reviews from Decanter and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Vintage
The 2010 growing season began with a consistently mild spring and regular rainfall. Flowering conditions were generally favourable, and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot benefited from longer-than-usual skin contact during vinification. The resulting wine combines concentrated fruit with impressive phenolic ripeness, depth and structure.
Producer Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep brick red and bright in condition.
Aroma: A complex and powerful bouquet led by violets, blueberries and redcurrants. With bottle age, these fruit aromas have developed additional layers of tar, leather and chocolate. Extended barrel maturation contributes spicy, toasty notes without dominating the fruit.
Palate: Redcurrant and mulberry provide a rich, sweet entry and generous mid-palate. Bright acidity contributes freshness, while concentrated phenolics build depth and mouthfeel. The tannins are evident but beautifully integrated, giving the wine a smooth texture and long finish.
Winemaking
All fruit was hand-picked, destemmed and transferred to small open fermenters. Fermentation was conducted with pure yeast cultures at temperatures of up to 28°C, with colour and flavour extracted by hand plunging at least three times per day.
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot remained on skins for approximately 19 days, while the Cabernet Franc spent around 10 days on skins. The finished wine was matured in oak before bottling.
