Overview
The 1999 Wendouree Shiraz Malbec is a mature Clare Valley red from one of Australia’s most distinctive and tightly held producers. Combining Shiraz with Malbec, the wine reflects a traditional style associated with Wendouree, with concentrated dark fruit, persistent tannins and considerable structure.
Described as an authentic Clare Valley style harking back to late 19th-century winemaking traditions, this mature release combines blackberry, plum and mulberry fruit with a touch of eucalypt and firm, enduring tannins. Its rarity, provenance and more than 25 years of bottle age make the 1999 vintage particularly appealing to collectors of traditional Australian wine.
Tasting Notes
Impressively concentrated, with voluminous blackberry, plum and mulberry fruit complemented by a touch of eucalypt. Fine, rusty and persistent tannins provide substantial structure and lasting power.
Winemaking
The wine was vinified in open stainless steel-lined fermenters and matured for 12 months in French oak, comprising 20% new oak with the balance seasoned.
