Overview

The 1991 Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz is a mature release from one of Australia’s most revered single-vineyard Shiraz sites. The name Hill of Grace comes from the German “Gnadenberg”, referring to the Lutheran church overlooking the historic vineyard near Parrot Hill, around 4km north-west of Henschke Cellars.

Sourced from the 4-hectare Hill of Grace vineyard in Eden Valley, this wine reflects the depth, concentration and longevity that have made Hill of Grace one of Australia’s most collectible wines.

Vintage & Winemaking

The 1991 Eden Valley vintage followed a short winter with below-average rainfall. Budburst and flowering were early, with mild spring conditions followed by a warm to hot summer. It was the earliest vintage on record at the time, producing high sugar levels, below-average yields and deeply concentrated fruit flavours.

The wine was matured for 18 months in hogsheads, using 85% French oak and 15% American oak, with 29% new oak and 71% seasoned oak before blending and bottling.

A powerful and deeply aromatic Hill of Grace, showing pepper, prunes, Armagnac, creamy black fruit and vanilla notes, with dense fruit and a long tannic finish.

Tasting Notes

Dark crimson with brick-red hues. The nose is intensely scented with black fruits, ripe plums, licorice, anise and five spice. The palate is rich, complex and pure, showing ripe plum skin, menthol and spice, supported by crisp acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins through a complete, beautifully mellow finish.

Food Pairing

Excellent with beef, venison, roast lamb, aged hard cheeses and deeply flavoured slow-cooked dishes.

Cellaring Potential

This mature release sits within its long drinking window and may continue to hold through 2040, depending on provenance and bottle condition. Decant carefully before serving.
