Coonawarra has remained the source of shiraz fruit for Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. Winemaker Peter Gago uses a mix of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads to tighten up the fruit that seems more simpatico with Coonawarra fruit than American oak. The style is grainy, resiny with a touch of herbaceousness to set off the cherries and pomegranate along with cooler mulberry, loganberry mixed with cedar and mahogany old dresser, flecked with licorice and spice. Not as rich as the previous edition, but it is Coonawarra. 128 spends a year in French oak hogsheads (24% new, 33% one-year-old, and 43% in two-year-old barrels).
