It is known for its powerful and aromatic flagship RunRig Shiraz (from 120–160-year-old vines with a dash of Viognier) and The Laird, a single-vineyard Shiraz that is one of the most expensive wines made in Australia.

The estate produces around 15 wines based on Rhône varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Torbreck was founded in 1994 by David Powell with grapes obtained on a sharecropping basis. The name comes from a forest in Scotland where he once worked as a lumberjack, and many wines also carry Scottish-themed names.

The estate has developed its own vineyard holdings but continues to source much of its fruit from selected growers throughout the Barossa Valley. Strong early ratings from The Wine Advocate brought international attention, including consistent annual scores of 95–99 points for RunRig and multiple 100-point vintages of The Laird. The chief winemaker is Ian Hongell.

Specifications

Vintage: 2024

Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz

Region: Barossa Valley / South Australia / Australia

Vineyard / Geo info: Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch, Ebenezer

Fermentation: Open fermented and basket pressed

Maturation: 12 months in well-seasoned French oak hogsheads and Foudre

Production Attributes: Hand-harvested and hand-tended

Alcohol: 15%

Acidity TA: 6.00 g/L

Acidity pH: 3.60

Winemaker: Ian Hongell

Drinking Window: 2024–2034

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0956/5483/8635/files/2024TorbreckWoodcutter_sShiraz750ml.png?v=1780389847
2023-torbreck-the-struie-barossa-shiraz-double-magnum-3l
2023 Torbreck The Struie Barossa Shiraz 3L Double Magnum

3000ml Magnum Bottle

Awards, Ratings and Reviews

Matthew Jukes – 2023 Vintage
Score: 99/100

"Experts will fall off their chairs while tasting this wine, while newcomers will feel spectacularly welcome. lt's a slice of eminently affordable luxury, and you'd be mad not to take advantage of it today."

James Suckling – 2023 Vintage
“A lovely balance of Eden Valley spices and Barossa power and strength, with aromas of blackberries, graphite, olive tapenade, violets and purple fruit. This system emphasized the communal element of the whole rather than any one farm, and the RunRig Shiraz embodies this philosophy by blending Shiraz from old dry-grown vineyards with Viognier to complement the strengths and complexities of each individual parcel of fruit, giving the wine a further dimension. The resulting wine has often drawn comparisons with the beautifully fragrant and tautly structured wines produced from the steep slopes of the Northern Rhône Valley's Appellation of Côte Rôtie. Since 1994, they have remained committed to creating exceptional Rhone-style red and white wines that reflect the very best vineyards in Australia's famous Barossa region. Provenance is everything to them, and they believe that the Barossa is the most exciting place to make wine in the world. With a European sense of tradition, Torbreck pays tribute to the vineyards with minimal intervention, creating wines of richness, structure and length that age gracefully. The multi-generational growers, whose descendants arrived here nearly two centuries ago, are the backbone of Torbreck's winemaking aspirations. They work in partnership with the people of the Barossa who grow their fruit, always aiming to get the very best out of their vineyard sites. At Torbreck, they constantly seek to understand the difference between all of these special places in the Barossa and how this combination of soil, climate and farming experience is reflected in unique grape flavors. They are simply custodians, enhancing the innate expressiveness of the wines and enabling them to reveal over time their individual origins and personality. Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland where the winery's founder, David Powell worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies.

The winemaking style at Torbreck is meticulous and dedicated to producing exceptional wines. They use carefully selected 225-litre oak barriques for maturation, known as Dominique Laurent 'Magic Casks'. The oak is personally harvested from Forêt de Tronçais in Allier, and the staves are aged for 48 to 54 months at an exposed location for maximum seasoning. The staves are then hand-made into barrels and heated over three differing flames for several hours, resulting in a gentle toast due to the remarkable density of the wood. Torbreck's winemaking style reflects their commitment to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Barossa region.

The Descendant Vineyard is the crown jewel of Torbreck, located in the small yet vibrant hamlet of Marananga, which is nestled between Stonewell and Greenock and adjacent to Seppetlsfield. Marananga has become a sanctuary for producing some of the finest red wine in the Barossa Valley. Its unique terroir produces deeply coloured red wines that are renowned for their natural balance and formidable structure. The Descendant Vineyard is particularly special to Torbreck, as it was the original block of the estate and remains home to their winery and cellar door. The vineyard was established on a traditional mixed farm in 1993, and it has been producing exceptional grapes ever since. Planted with cuttings from ancient Barossa Shiraz vines that produce the iconic RunRig wine, the Descendant Vineyard is home to the true descendants of RunRig. Mataro, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne vines were later added, contributing to the vineyard's diverse range of varietals. In 2018, the vineyard even established a traditional bush vine Grenache vineyard, adding another important dimension to the vineyard's offerings. Marananga's terroir provides the Descendant Vineyard with great substance and energy, which results in grapes that are singular in their dimension. These grapes are so exceptional that they warrant single vineyard bottlings, something that Torbreck is immensely proud of.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0956/5483/8635/files/2022_Torbreck_The_Descendant_Shiraz_-_Viognier_750ml.jpg?v=1767587921
2015-torbreck-runrig-shiraz-1-5l
2015 Torbreck RunRig Shiraz 1.5L Magnum

A name that needs very little introduction in the world of iconic Australian wine. On the palate, it offers a wonderful textural mouthfeel with soft, round tannins and cleansing acidity. This balance imparts a modern Barossa elegance, combined with the power derived from the extremely low-yielding vines. This wine honors its heritage and the 19th-century vision for grape growing and dry farming.

Enjoy this wine starting in 2026, and it can be cellared until 2050 or beyond.

Winery: Torbreck

Varietal(s): Syrah - Viognier

Size: 750mL

Country: Australia

State: South Australia

Region: Barossa Valley

Vintage: 2016

Alc/Vol: 14.5%

Closure Type: Cork

Drinking Window: 2019-2035

Wine Sweetness: Dry

Tasting Notes:

Bold and aromatic, the wine showcases intense fruit aromas with hints of lavender and spice. Since 1994, they have remained committed to creating exceptional Rhone-style red and white wines that reflect the very best vineyards in Australia's famous Barossa region. Provenance is everything to them, and they believe that the Barossa is the most exciting place to make wine in the world. With a European sense of tradition, Torbreck pays tribute to the vineyards with minimal intervention, creating wines of richness, structure, and length that age gracefully. The multi-generational growers, whose descendants arrived here nearly two centuries ago, are the backbone of Torbreck's winemaking aspirations. They work in partnership with the people of the Barossa who grow their fruit, always aiming to get the very best out of their vineyard sites. At Torbreck, they constantly seek to understand the difference between all of these special places in the Barossa and how this combination of soil, climate, and farming experience is reflected in unique grape flavours. They are simply custodians, enhancing the innate expressiveness of the wines and enabling them to reveal over time their individual origins and personalities. Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland, where the winery's founder, David Powell, worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies.

The winemaking style at Torbreck is meticulous and dedicated to producing exceptional wines. They use carefully selected 225-litre oak barrels for maturation, known as Dominique Laurent 'Magic Casks'. It is immediately taken to the winery where the fruit is gently de-stemmed into wooden & concrete open top fermenters.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0956/5483/8635/files/2022_Torbreck_The_Descendant_Shiraz_-_Viognier_750ml_2ca75825-cd4e-48b7-be5b-23d172cb45f2.jpg?v=1767589600
2019-torbreck-the-laird-gift-box750ml
2019 Torbreck The Laird Gift Box 750ml

Critics have scored this as one of the top 5 Australian wines.

Vineyard notes: "Planted in 1958, the five acre vineyard is traditionally dry grown and comes from an original Barossa clonal source.
