Invigorating natural acidity shines through nicely, leading into the sensation of tannin structure, which is supporting the wine beautifully, while not being too upfront. It offers a very pleasant composition of fruit flavours and savoury elements. When tasting that fruit for the first time it was clear to me that I’m about to get my hands on grapes that will perfectly complement the flavour profile of Ciccocioppo (C) grapes, which have proven in year 2020 to be of great quality. They both share this rugged environment, a shallow loamy soil that varies from gravely to rocky in parts, providing exciting mineral foundations on which aromatics, flavour, and structure of the end wine is built upon.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePicked on 1st and 7th of April respectively with 100% whole-bunch vinification of ‘C’ portion. Why? Because I can, and out of curiosity. But mainly because stalks were perfectly matured despite the cooler season. Rhone Valley inspiration you might wonder. For sure, coupled with impromptu pragmatic decision, I have to add. Due to extremely low quantity of grapes (an unfortunate mis-happening beyond my control), this batch was only plunged twice a day during the entire fermentation, while ‘H’ parcel received a couple of pump-overs at the peak of fermentation as well. Dark, ruby red colour, with vibrant hue at the rim suggesting freshness which is undeniably aligned with the characteristics of the season. Bright acidity tends to convince this is a wine that will go the distance easily, with firm tannin structure, depth, and complexity reassuring this. A complex wine that will keep developing its attributes over the years. Situated nearby historic hamlet of Light Pass, on a small patch of distinct ‘terra rossa’ soil, these days in custody of Roger Maywald. Needless to say, I felt the pressure to do this precious block of land justice and create a wine that possesses all the eclectic characteristics of the old site, as well as adding that small bit of ‘here and now’, finished off with a smidgen of my own personal fingerprint, of course.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe season 2020\/2021, or as many call it ‘vintage of the decade’, was prolonged and mild, which is somewhat rare for Barossa these days, yet very much welcomed. Perfectly ripe fruit was picked by hand on 17th of March and let rest for a day before fully destemmed grapes were put in a fermenting open top vat for a short cold soak. Upon onset of spontaneous fermentation with endemic yeast cap was plunged twice a day with a few pump-overs midway through the fermentation. After 12 days skins were pressed off, wine settled overnight, and then transferred to seasoned 4 French oak barriques, one of them used once before.
